Here are some discussion questions/ideas/thoughts I had after reading Fiasco and listening to the interview with Ricks:

  • I like how Ricks describes the situation as a Tragedy with 5 acts, and we are in the 3rd act. I like how he breaks it down that way, but this interview was done several years ago so, are we still in Act 3? If not or if so hypothetically what do you believe would happen in Act 5 of this tragedy?

  • Its been noted on several different occasions that there is a problem with the communication in all areas of the war (ex: between the government and the army). What are new methods/ways that we could apply to help eliminate this problem? Or is it inevitable?

  • This quote really stuck to me, "Every military strength contains the seed of its own weakness. Make a weapon system too strong and it will be slow or will consume so much energy in moving that it requires a burdensome supply chain to keep it fueled. Make it too light and fast and it will be dangerously vulnerable when it breaks down, which is inevitable. Make it too successful and commanders will stick with it too long, until its weaknesses are revealed by the enemy" (130). I had never looked at it like this. To me it proves how necessary it is for your "military strength" to evolve. What are your thoughts on it?
